about

Our public relations department recently contacted Charles Hardin Hussalonia to record his long awaited follow-up to 2003’s eponymous collection of demos. We found him living on a houseboat somewhere in Estonia, collecting vintage bottle caps and living on a diet of white rice and distilled, ionized water. Still, Charles assured us that he had a slew of songs waiting to be recorded. Studio time was booked and everyone was excited. That is, until Charles arrived with his promised “slew of songs.” Yes, he did have about fifty songs, all scribbled into one spiral notebook, but they went by odd, unsettling names like, “Give Me That Ole’ Time Salad Spinner,” “Lazy Eyed Lucy, I Love Your Lazy Eye,” “(Do the) Vintage Bottle Cap Rock,” and “Going to the Kangaroo Sock Hop.” Musically, the songs were just about as eccentric. Feeling sorry for the troubled singer-songwriter, producer Kermit Haarg chose ten songs and had Charles record very basic demos.

When the tapes arrived at the Hussalonia headquarters, it was clear that a full-length album was not going to happen. Sylvia Octavia , head of the Hussalonia Artists and Repetoire Department, chose two of the most palatable songs (“Crush on You” and “Don’t Let Him Use Those Fists on You”), hired some session musicians to flesh out the demos, and sent Charles a thank you note attached to a bag of rice for his troubles. No one has heard from him since.

Not wanting to tarnish Charles's name, the Hussalonia Department of Semantics suggested that we release the single under a psuedonym. Written painfully light and in a shaky penciled script not unlike Charles's handwriting, Haarg's orginal demos bore the name Harvey Wallbanger on the reel boxes. It seemed unusual at the time, but when pressed for an alternate artist name, Harvey Wallbanger Hussalonia seemed the obvious choice.
