LABOR OMNIA VINCIT

I’m so tired I could sleep through my dreams. Now, I’m not saying I’m gonna give up, but it would be a relief to think animal but still pass for a man. I’m working for the weakened. In training to be better still, I surround myself in strangers listening for truth, trying to crack the code, snap the lock. I’m working for the weakened. It’s too easy to love what you think you own, but nothing can be kept because we’re ultimately alone. So open your heart and let the fucker bleed. Let love dare you to let compassion lead. In the songs of our youth though the tiger beat teens were still gnashing their canine teeth, the deer and antelope still played. I’m working for the weakened. Oppress the pride to puff the mane, in a fatherless nation with fathers’ last names. Sorting and sifting to shift the blame. Sometimes you win, and sometimes you just kill the game.

The sun it shows its miserable face. There’s a dead bluebird on my shoulder. A broken bone, a twisted fate. A feathered friend lying in state. Meaningless cues and left field blues. I’ve got nothing good under the hood. But when in Rome you’re all alone, and there’s no such place as home. Dreams, don’t fail me now Don’t fail me now Don’t fail me now I said, dreams, don’t fail me now Don’t fail me now The world’s been ruined and everyone’s consumed. Our collective misunderstandings exhumed. One mis-raised and two mis-fed, I’m longing for all the lives I haven’t led. Dreams, don’t fail me now Don’t fail me now Don’t fail me now I said, dreams, don’t fail me now Don’t fail me now

Look Forward 02:31
Ask me how deep the ocean is. Ask me how far is the sky. Ask me how long this will go on, but please don’t ask me why. A shortfall in the long run will nary bedarken the stars. Astral vows to raise eyebrows and wonder where you are. There’s always something to look forward to. Sometimes you just don’t know what it is. There’s always something to look forward to. Sometimes you just don’t know what it is. Life on earth is finite, you see, dependent on the life of the sun, but space goes on infinitely or infinity plus one. There’s always something to look forward to. Sometimes you just don’t know what it is. There’s always something to look forward to. Sometimes you just don’t know what it is. I see the heartache of history. I see pain and loneliness and fear. I see the arms of the one I love, but I can’t seem to get there from here. There’s always someone to look forward to. Sometimes you just don’t know what it is. There’s always something to look forward to. Sometimes I just don’t know what it is.

Shoot for the moon and stab the sun. Go outside and tell someone you love them so, even if you don’t. Now’s the time to kiss and tell. Throw all your cash in a wishing well, or just wish you would even if you won’t. Tomorrow’s just another day waiting to defeat me. Go ahead and stay in bed, but don’t give up completely. Give me the good news first. Give me the good news first. Love is patient and humble and kind. It’s also deaf and dumb and blind. Tell me more things beautifully untrue. Take a spin or spin a tale. Return to me, first class mail. I’m writing all my livelong days away. The falling sky. The rising sea. We all will die eventually. Every dance will be the last dance that I save. Tomorrow’s just another day waiting to defeat me. Go ahead and stay in bed, but don’t give up completely. Give me the good news first. Give me the good news first.

Make One Up 03:06
From a small singularity, the universe expands, struck apart by force or pulled apart by hands. The day’s end is drawing near. It’s time to sail through the underworld, writing tomorrow’s script and greeting the dead. Well, everything can happen for a reason if you’re willing to make one up. I’m making all my nowhere plans for nobody. For all intents and purposes, I was born by accident. Oh see, can you say whatever you meant? ‘Cause everything can happen for a reason if you’re willing to make one up. Like, I’m making all my nowhere plans for nobody. Whatever works will fail. Whatever starts will stall. I know it feels good to lie. Fate and free for all. But I am not afraid to say that life has no point. There’s no meaning in anything unless you make your own. Wretchedness and agony violent deaths and woebegone snares. Everyone is suffering everywhere. But everything can happen for a reason if you’re willing to make one up. I’m making all these nowhere plans for nobody.

The only thing under my hat is a rabbit. I’ll think of something worse to appreciate how bad I have it. If you think long enough, you’ll arrive at some regrettable place. Go on, world. I’ll just sit out here and wait. I don’t know how to live, and so I am stalling. This is the sound I make when I’m falling. Anything worth saying feels impossible to articulate. Go on world, I’ll just sit out here and wait. I’ll get to where I’m going. Who cares if I’m just a little late? Go on, world, I’ll just sit out here and wait.
8.
You were supposed to everything you did. There’s no such thing as fate. Who are you trying to kid? But, my god, it would be nice to have something to blame for all of my mistakes, for all of your shame. Every night I just don't seem to want to go to sleep, and every morning I never want to wake up. It’s amazing what we’ll tolerate in the name of entertainment. Guns drawn at high noon. The names of mountains on the moon. I’ve been dumped by reality and I’m taking it hard. I lied when I said I was fine. I’m going to lie down. Everyone wants one weird trick to alleviate their ills. It’s easy to be anti-establishment. It’s harder to declare your intent. No one needs your thoughts and prayers for a preventable incident. If you love something you set it free, and if it breaks just throw it away. Nothing seems to be worth saving, anymore, anyway. Everyone wants one weird trick to alleviate their ills. I’ve been dumped by reality and I’m taking it hard. I lied when I said I was fine. I’m lying now. Everyone wants one weird trick to alleviate their ills.
9.
Let there be light, however slight, and words will lead the way. When you are lost, you can curse or call, and words will lead the way. Nobody knows it like I do. Nobody knows it like I do. There are so many great ways to destroy your life and create misery. Take to the shelf. Reinvent yourself. Let words lead the way. Nobody knows it like I do. Nobody knows it like I do. I want everyone’s heart to feel as broken as mine. I’ve got a lonesome old sound, tangled in time. Nobody knows it like I do. Nobody knows it like I do.
10.
Tell me this once more. We’ve gone and come back from this before. Oh, the switches that do not work that we flip every now and then just to make sure. Have we made no progress, only change? To suffer is to be human, to inflict suffering, is less so. The past is a place where everything is out of reach. The future I thought I had was taken from me. Have we made no progress, only change? If you can’t push it forward, turn around and pull. The best things in life aren’t always profitable. Potential is always at risk by the very meaninglessness of it. Chaos is indifferent to the crimes we won’t admit. so it’s crucial to preserve the fragile order we impose upon it. Have we made no progress, only change?
11.
Get out your seat. Get off your knees. Everyone, eyes up here, please. Don’t be awful. Oh no, don’t be awful. How does this work? What does this mean? C’mon, everyone, look up from your screens. Don’t be awful. Oh no, don’t be awful. Don’t be awful. I know I am and therefore I think it’s better to mute your baser instincts. Don’t be awful. Oh no, don’t be awful. To all of my heroes, and everyone else, I say unto you as I say to myself. Don’t be awful. Oh no, don’t be awful.

about

In 2015, The Hussalonia Founder began writing songs for a podcast that he hoped would bring his music to a much larger audience. Writing for a troubled but insistently hopeful character, The Hussalonia Founder channeled his inner optimist for songs like “Look Forward,” “Good News First,” “I’ll Just Sit Out Here and Wait,” “Nobody Knows It,” and “Dreams, Don’t Fail Me Now.” Unfortunately, he was written out of the podcast in early 2016 and consequently slipped into a deep depression — a depression that would only deepen as he witnessed the election of Donald Trump. After the election, the hopeful songs he wrote for the podcast resonated with The Founder more than ever, and he began writing new songs that reflected life in post-Trump America (“Working for the Weakened,” “Control Z,” “One Weird Trick,” and “Progress vs. Change”). The title (Latin for “work conquers everything” and originally from a Virgil poem) is a phrase often used in labor movements. At the end of the 1902 film “Le Voyage dans la Lune” the phrase is written above the word “science” at the base of a celebratory statue. The Hussalonia Founder liked the political hopefulness of the phrase — the idea that, together, we can work through any problem — but its dry wit also appealed to him on a personal level, the idea that he, a tireless workaholic, would eventually be conquered by his own work.
